Sonja Alitalo

Sonja is Finnish born and has graduated from The Conservatory of Turku and later with an Master of Arts degree from The Theatre Academy of Helsinki.

She has danced in Estonian National Ballet, and then later with the Finnish National Ballet. Dur- ing those years Sonja danced through the basic classical repertoire both as a member of the corps de ballet and as a soloist in ballets like Giselle, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, La Bayadere, Don Quijote, The Conservatoire (Bournonville). Sonja started teaching ballet in 1998 and has since worked as a regular guest teacher in vari- ous schools in Finland, and as a long time faculty member in Dance Studio Footlight. She is currently still a regular guest in Helsinki’s Tanssille organization teaching professional morning classes there, and at Tanssivintti in Helsinki. Last seven years Sonja has lived in Germany and has been teaching there in Aki Kato Tanzforum in Mannheim and Nostos Tanztheatre in Heidelberg.

Sonja has had a wide range of studies in different ballet methods over the years, including: Vaganova, Bournonville and the French style that she studied in Paris with the Finnish Cultural Foundations grant in 2004, and she has also studies in the historical pre-romantic style of bal- let, Franklin method (her MA thesis), and while living in Germany for the last 7 years, the Forsythe style.

Sonja is also a trained STOTT pilates instructor.
